| It is well known that health standards depend not only on the
availability of health resources such as hospitals, doctors, nurses
but also on general environmental conditions and Cyprus has been
fortunate to have a mild temperate climate while the absence of
heavy industry has meant that air pollution has been limited.
In addition the standard of education and early attempts at provision
of piped water, sewage disposal and good sanitation meant that the
right hygienic environment has been created in Cyprus.
The two main health care services in Cyprus are Government General
Hospitals and Private Sector clinics / hospitals.
The Government Health Sector provides care free of charge for refugees,
army and civil servants and their dependents. Locals on a low to
middle income may also receive free or reduced rate medical care.
The General Hospital can offer Health care to foreigners once they
have become a permanent resident for a small annual fee.
All Government Hospitals have an accident and emergency department,
treatment is free of charge to everyone irrespective of economic
situation and nationality, whether local or non-local. If a person
non-eligible for free treatment is admitted, then fees must be paid.
Foreigners living in Cyprus can use private medical insurance to
cover these costs. Insurance can be obtained from any local insurance
company or through your bank and is relatively inexpensive.
The Private Sector (Doctors, Dentists and Specialists) is open
to all those who can afford it, their standards are high and fees
are relatively low compared to European standards. These Private
clinics and Polyclinics are situated throughout the island, offering
a range of medical services.
Almost all brands of manufactured medicines are available on the
island of Cyprus. In each city there are two or three chemists that
offer an all night service and remain open during weekends and holidays.
Their telephone numbers are listed in the local papers and they
can provide names and numbers of doctors on call.
